Tooth Gem FAQs

How long do tooth gems last?

Typically, tooth gems can last anywhere from a few months to over a year, although there’s no guaranteed lifespan. How long yours stays in place depends on factors such as its placement, your bite, eating habits and oral hygiene.

Because tooth gems are designed to be temporary, they will eventually come away naturally. Good aftercare and avoiding picking or playing with the gem can help it last longer.

Does getting a tooth gem hurt?

No. Applying a tooth gem is generally quick and painless. There’s no drilling or injections involved- the gem is bonded to the surface of the tooth using dental-grade materials. You may notice the gem with your tongue at first, but most people quickly get used to how it feels.

Can I brush my teeth normally after getting a tooth gem?

Yes. You can brush and floss normally once your tooth gem has settled. For the first 24 hours, brush gently around the gem and avoid using an electric toothbrush directly over it. After that, good oral hygiene is important for keeping both your teeth and tooth gem looking their best

What happens if my tooth gem falls off?

Tooth gems aren’t permanent, so they will eventually come off naturally. If yours falls off, don’t try to reattach it yourself using household glue or other adhesives. The gem can usually be replaced at a new appointment if you’d like it reapplied.
If you notice any bonding material remaining on the tooth or the tooth feels rough afterwards, we recommend having it checked and, if necessary, polished by a dentist.

Can you remove my tooth gem?

We are not able to remove them unfortunately. We recommend having removal carried out by a dentist, who can safely remove the gem and any remaining bonding material without unnecessarily damaging the tooth enamel.
Avoid picking, scraping or trying to remove the gem yourself.

What should I avoid after my tooth gem appoint
ment?

For the first 1–2 hours, avoid eating or drinking anything other than water to allow the bond to fully set. For the first 24 hours, avoid very hard, crunchy or sticky foods and try not to bite directly onto the gem. Avoid touching or picking at it with your fingers or tongue.

You can continue brushing your teeth, but be gentle around the gem for the first day. After that, maintain your normal oral-hygiene routine to help keep both the gem and your teeth looking their best.
